What do you recommend for 1 day in Taipei?

Hi, me and my boyfriend will be in Taipei next week (Saturday) on transit to Bali. Our flight arrives at 2:30pm in Taipei and leaves the next morning. I was thinking of booking a hostel (I think it’s at Taipei Main Station MRT) for the night and then heading over to the 101 Tower. After that, I have no idea. What are some recommendations of things to do in Taipei for just one afternoon/evening. We love culture, eating, drinking, clubbing, museums, anything really. The only things is that we don’t want any stress or having to rush to places before they close etc. nothing too major but we want to get a taste for Taipei (we’ll also be staying one night on our way back). Thanks to anyone for any hints.

    Museums:
The Palace Museum is a great place to start.
For a slice of culture, I would also look at the Traditional Puppet Museum…it’s about a 10 minute walk from one of the MRT stations.

    Culture has many options:
Take the Red MRT all the way up to the DanShui station. It’s about 20 minutes, if I remember correctly. It has a nice area by the water, many restaurants, and is just great for people watching and relaxing.

There’s never a shortage of temples to look at if that interests you.

Take the brown line to the Taipei Zoo.

If you want to relax, take the MRT to the XinBeiTou line and enjoy the hot springs.

More information on these, and many other things to do around Taipei, can be found at this web site:

Get a room and then ride the MRT to Ximen and hang out. That place has it all – a pedestrian district, a night market, clubs, theatres, shopping, neon lights everywhere, TVs on the sides of buildings, night life galore, street performers, music, awesome restaurants, etc. It’s not sketchy, though – you’ll see people of all ages, even though the whole place has a very young, exciting feel to it. When I was in college, my friends and I would go just to walk around the streets and be part of the excitement.

Visit the Palace museum (largest in Asia) OR Go to Taipei 101 (tallest building in the world – don’t get lost, it’s only 2 blocks from the MRT, but you have to orient yourself to go in the right direction ?). If you get the chance, go to a night market.

BTW – pick up a free map of Taipei at airport terminal #1, or any of the MRT stations. A free booklet “This Month in Taiwan” at most hotels can help too.
