There are a lot of things to in Bali … I’m indonesian, so i hope my knowledge will help you …

For the place to stay, i suggest you to stay in Nusa Dua or Kuta Beach. You can find a lot of nice hotels there.
In Kuta : Hard Rock Cafe Hotel, Mercure Kuta Bali, Club Bali Suites
In Nusa Dua : Sheraton Laguna, Hilton Bali International, Westin, Amanusa
For those kinds of hotels, you can spend about $75 – $200. But if you don’t want to spend too much, you can choose Ibis Bali Hotel, Inna Kuta Hotel ( about $50) …

    Things to do : a lot !!
I suggest you to not spend a lot of time in the pubs or disco (which you can find a ton in Kuta) … There are a lot of things much more interesting …
    1. visit the beaches
    2. watch traditional dances (example : Barong and Tari Kecak)
    3. Visit the mountain and the lakes ( in Ubud)
    5. Visit the temples (eg : Uluwatu, Pura Besakih, etc)
    6. Get some spa (very nice Bali traditional spa)
    7. Buy souvenir at traditional markets (a t-shirt just for $1, can’t lose that chance right ?)
    8. Visit Garuda Wisnu Kencana, it’s an exposition plce, where you can find the biggest Hindu’s statue
    9. Water sports !!
    10. Eat indonesian food !

    Best beaches (for me) :
    1. Lovina Beach ( in the nord part)
    2. Nusa Dua
    3. Jimbaran
    4. Sanur
    5. Kuta Beach

    Enjoy Bali !!

Another hotel that you might want to consider is Ritz Carlton. And a bar / restaurant called Kudeta (Coup D’Etat) is on your list of MUST-GO. It is not in anywhere near Kuta or any of the other touristy places and it’s a bit out of the way, you have to either drive there or catch a cab… but it’s really worth it. They have decent wine list and the drinks are quite reasonably priced. It is owned and run by Australians from what I can remember.

If you ever want to spend your vacation hanging out on a beautiful beach with a 5-star hotel behind you, this is where you should break open your piggy bank and look for places in Nusa Dua. I was there last year and it was great and not all that expensive.

“Good to stay” it depends on how much budget you want to spend for accommodation. USD50 is good enough for me, of course Bali has USD2000/night accommodation that too good for me… “Best Beaches”… try Dreamland… you’ll love it.

I had been there for about one week last year. It’s the most beautiful place to be. I wish I could stay longer. Nusa Duan beach is the best, that’s why so many five stars hotels there. It’s in the south part of the island. Unfortunately, i forgot the hotel name i stayed. since you only stay for 5 days, i suggest you to pick a good hotel in Nusa Duan, because these hotels are built along the best beach in Bali. It’s kind of like the ocean is in the “backyard” of your hotel. it’s very convient and lovely. I even spent a whole day just in hotel. You will love it!
Ubu is a great place to go, too. There is a Lotus resturant, which is famous and beautiful. You better get a lonelyplanet book. One of the famous temple has great view to ocean, it has a lot of moneky ( i forget its name), don’t wear glasses. the monkey love to rob it from you.
Shopping and shopping , don’t forget it.

I also had a good time eating seafood at a bar in Jimbara.(it might be the one that got bombed last year, because they their customers are most foreigners.)Most of the Bali texi drivers will take you to that bar, because they can receive benifit from the bar for taking you there. you can eat seafood on the beach and watching runset. that’s a wonderful memory.
