I’ve had one of the WORST flying experiences on Wings Fly, a subsidiary of Lion Air, flying from Batam to Jakarta.
Believe me, they have small booklets called ” Invocation Card” on board their aircraft, which can be found in the pouch before your seat where they also keep air sickness bags.
The “Invocation Card” contains prayers for Roman Catholics, Protestants, Moslems, Hindus, Buddhists and some Chinese faith.
If your aircraft hits a turbulence, you can pull out one of these cards and begin chanting a prayer of your choice. It has frightening words such as ” God, please protect this aircraft from crashing…” , ” Bless the pilots to land safely.”…” Bless our friends and relatives waiting at the airport and home…” and so on.
On that flight from Batam to Jakarta, we hit a severe weather turbulence and the cabin crew made some announcement. Almost immediately, I observed other passengers dive into that seat pouch and pull out some booklet. The next instant, some were praying with their arms outstretched.
The aircraft was making all sorts of squeaky and creeky sounds and seeing people pray in midst of a weather turbulence, is not exactly my idea of a flight. I almost kissed the ground when we finally landed at the Soekarno-Hatta airport.
After that incident, I never flew a single budget carrier in Indonesia, during my length of stay in that country.
Garuda is somewhat better though there are claims to the contrary.
Despite….if you do go ahead and fly Lion Air, make sure you take away one of their Invocation Card. It makes an excellent travel souvenir and my friends back home had a good laugh when they saw and read it.
